Pitlochry Festival Theatre

This collection includes architectural plans, leaflets and programmes.

Pitlochry Festival Theatre was founded by John Stewart in 1951. It opened with its inaugural season in the Autumn of '51. The aim of the Festival Theatre was to provide a summer season of plays in repertory. Stewart had previously established the Park Theatre in Glasgow, which closed in January 1949, but decided to move north to Pitlochry and open a theatre in the hills. The theatre was a tent-like construction, meant only to used for a short time; however, it remained in use until it was replaced by a permanent building designed by James Dunbar-Naismith which opened in 1981.
