The Crawlers (Sp Coll Dougan 33)

The Special Collections department holds thousands of items relating to the Victorian era (broadly defined on these pages as the period ranging from 1800 to 1910), and covering a wide variety of subjects.  Nineteenth century material is found in many of the collections, but there are some which contain stronger holdings of Victorian material than others.  The Murray Collection for example is particularly useful when looking at the economic and social development of Scotland in the 19th century, the Dougan Collection contains a wealth of early photographs which vividly illustrate the Victorian period, while the Novel Collection is an outstanding resource for nineteenth century fiction, including many examples of triple decker novels.

There are several search methods available when looking for nineteenth century material in Special Collections:

  • Main Library Catalogue: use this to search for printed material and use the 'modify search' tool to further define your query, according to location, language and date
  • Manuscripts Catalogue: can be used to locate unpublished items held in Special Collections, allowing you to search for an individual person, a specific document, or a collection of material; to limit your searches to material produced in the Nineteenth Century only, combine your search terms in the document search option with '18' (omit inverted commas) in the Year search box
  • Selective Subject Index: provides broad information relating to specific areas of interest, ranging from literature and economics, to caricatures and alchemy
  • Collection Descriptions Pages: provide a general overview of the content of the main collections

The Victorian Resources web pages are arranged by the broad subject headings listed below and describe selected items of interest:
