Minton & Co. ceramics: The principal is a Parian figure of PRINCE ALFRED with his shetland pony, modelled by the Baron MAROCHETTI. The Italian vase is Majolica, decorated from a design by Mr ALFRED STEVENS. The vase, Louis XVI, contains groups after BOUCHER - the painting being executed by a process not hitherto employed. The LANTERN is in Parian, and is remarkable for its lightness, and the successful manner in which the decorations are carried out. The VASE on the opposite side is in Parian. The EWER is a Palissy vase. The FRIEZE is a reproduction of a fine work by Lucca della Robbia. The terminating bit is a specimen of ENCAUSTIC TILE (page 8)

Battam & Sons: a group of ETRUSCAN URNS, VASES, and a TAZZA - of various shapes and sizes in terra-cotta, which ably illustrate the progress of Art-manufacture in the reproduction of these famed works of the ancients (page 30)

Smith and Nicholson: The principal object on this page is a fine CENTREPIECE ... This, which is of massive proportions and good design, is the testimonial presented in 1861, at a public dinner presided over by the Premier, to the Right Hon. Sir William Goodenough Hayter, Bart., M.P., on his retirement from official life (page 39)

Messrs. W. Woollams & Co. wallpaper and Messrs. Clayton and Bell painted glass windows: the wallpaper is adapted from the Pompeian style, and is a fine example of harmony in colour as well as in perfection of finish. In this important branch of art the advance has been great in England - graceful simplicity having taken the place of gorgeous costliness; the window illustrates the Fall and Redemption (page 138)

Jewellery by Signor Castellini of Rome and dish by Messrs. Elkington & Co.: the jewels are, in nearly all cases, either copies or adaptations from ancient models, found in the several museums of Italy; but the taste, judgment, and intelligence of the accomplished artist have been exercised to fit them for modern requirements without impairing their original grace and beauty; of the dish, the four medallions surrounding the centre represent the four elements. It is a very remarkable specimen of sliver-work, designed by M. Willms. The accomplished artist - one of the great men of the age - surpassed his competitors of all countries (page 229)

Bent wood furniture by Messrs. Thonet of Vienna and plated works produced by Benson of Ludgate Hill: the furniture has obtained large popularity in England as well as on the Continent, combining in a remarkable degree lightness with strength, and being produced at singularly small cost. By a peculiar process in manufacture, the wood is bent to any shape. The designs are generally graceful and good, the great purpose of "use" being always kept in view; the plated works are of considerable excellence both in design and execution - those more especially the forms of which are taken from the antique; they are admirably engraved in "keeping", and adapted to modern uses (page 291)

Cover: "What to see", "How to see", and "Where to see" the principal objects of interest are questions which puzzle all who visit the International Exhibition for the first time. The Penny Guide is published to solve this difficulty, by supplying a short, simple, but comprehensive and complete handbook. It takes, as it were, the visitor by the hand, and leads him step by step from one court to another, until the whole building has been traversed (quote from preface: page 1)
