Death in Venice between 29 November 2000 and 23 December 2000 at the Citizens' Theatre Stalls Studio Glasgow by Citizens' Theatre Company
The protagonist of Death in Venice is the reputable, fifty-three-year-old writer Gustav Aschenbach, a member of the upper-middle class. Aschenbach writes under a very strict schedule, working every morning for a set amount of time, but he has recently been troubled by a lack of creativity. While walking by a cemetery to the north of Munich, he sees a strange man and has a vision of a jungle. This vision causes Aschenbach to temporarily forgo his tightly scheduled life, and he decides to travel south. Aschenbachs journey takes him to Venice, where, after a ride with a rogue gondolier, he checks into his hotel. It is here that he encounters a beautiful Polish boy named Tadzio. Over time he becomes more and more enamored of the young man, eventually abandoning all discipline and reason in the face of his infatuation. Despite discovering that there has been an outbreak of cholera, Aschenbach makes only a half-hearted attempt to leave the city before deciding to stay in Venice and continue devoting his time to watching Tadzio. One day Aschenbach trails Tadzio into the city and after losing track of the boy, eats some strawberries purchased from a street vendor. Later, while watching Tadzio at the beach, Aschenbach loses consciousness and dies, apparently from cholera that contaminated the strawberries. The world reacts to the death of this highly regarded author with shock and mourning. First performed in this version at the Citizens' Theatre, Glasgow on 24 November 1999.

In the bar of a Tokyo hotel between 29 February 1996 and 23 March 1996 at the Citizens' Theatre Circle Studio Glasgow by Citizens' Theatre Company
Mark is an alcoholic painter on the verge of a nervous breakdown who is trying to boost his sagging career by developing a new style in his Tokyo hotel room. Instead, he has convinced himself he is the first artist to discover colour, and it appears he has drifted into psychosis as he spreads canvases on the floor, sprays paint at them with a spray gun, and rolls around on them in the nude. Meanwhile, his promiscuous wife Miriam is loudly and crudely trying to seduce the bartender in the hotel lounge. Anxious to be free of her husband without losing his financial support, she has contacted his Manhattan art dealer and close friend Leonard and asked him to join them in Japan. When he arrives, she tries to persuade him to take her husband back to New York, but Mark dies. Feeling lost and without direction, she laments, "I have no plans. I have nowhere to go" as the curtain falls.

She is played by June Buckridge, who in real life is a gin-guzzling, cigar-chomping, slightly sadistic masculine woman, the antithesis of the sweet character she plays. She is often called George in real life, and lives with Alice "Childie" McNaught, a younger dimwitted woman she often verbally and sometimes physically abuses. When George discovers that her character is scheduled to be killed, she becomes increasingly impossible to work and live with.
