27 between 21 October 2011 and 9 June 2012 at the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh
American scientist Dr Richard Garfield has given Ursula a difficult choice. She is soon to become the mother superior of a convent that has been given the opportunity to take part in his revolutionary scientific study. Crucially, this study would require that the nuns donate their brains after death to potentially unlock the mysteries of Alzheimer's and dementia. Ursula must weigh up the value of preserving her faith, versus embracing science for the potential benefit of all. 27 is a play about loneliness, ageing, science and the loss of our sense of self. Drawing on research contained within the book Aging with Grace by Dr David Snowdon, it is an examination of a lifestyle in decline, but one whose dignity and faith could hold the key to some of the most urgent issues of our times our ageing population and the decline of our minds.

Be Near Me between 14 January 2009 and 16 May 2009 at the Palace Theatre Kilmarnock
Be Near Me is a Booker Prize nominated, captivating and moving story about love, morality and regret, told through the experiences of an Oxford-educated Catholic priest. Father David is assigned to a new parish in a crippled Scottish town on the Ayrshire coast, where sectarianism runs rife. He is a naïve and unworldly man, ill-suited to his new parish. Drifting away from his peers in the town, he is drawn to Mark and Lisa, a troubled teenage couple who attend the nearby school. Their everyday world of drunken nights and recreational drugs is as exotic and enthralling to him as his cloistered life is to them. As events take a perilous direction, Father David's infatuation splinters his life into pieces. Co-production between the National Theatre of Scotland and the Donmar Warehouse

Macbeth is dead. Under cover of night, an English army has swept through the landscape, killed the tyrant and taken the seat of power. Attempting to restore peace and put in place a new ruler, the commanding officer is beset by a brutal guerrilla uprising and simmering discontent amongst his own inexperienced troops. Struggling to grasp the alien customs and politics of this harsh country, he finds himself drawn towards the tyrant's powerful widow in search of someone to share his burden of responsibility. Increasingly isolated from his own men and Scottish allies alike, his efforts to restore order appear futile as the situation spins out of control.

Girl X between 4 March 2011 and 20 April 2011 at the Traverse Theatre Edinburgh
Eleven year old Girl X has severe cerebral palsy and the mental age of a 5-month old infant. Her condition will not, cannot, change or improve. Her mother believes that, for Girl X, the physical changes that accompany adolescence can only bring distress. So, to spare her the onset of menstruation, Mrs X has requested that surgeons remove her daughter's womb. The doctors have accepted the argument that this controversial surgery will, ultimately, improve her quality of life and have sought legal approval to carry out the procedure. In Girl X the case is examined from the point of view of the onlookers, a Greek chorus that asks what could or should happen next? Performer and disabled rights activist Robert Softley challenges this chorus, examining the case and related ethical issues. When do private matters become public concern? Is the majority always right? Do wheelchair users know better?Where will it all end?

Glasgow Girls between 31 October 2012 and 8 March 2014 at the Citizens' Theatre Glasgow by National Theatre Of Scotland
Based on a true story, Glasgow Girls follows a group of seven teenage girls whose lives are changed forever when they arrive at school one day to be told that one of their friends - and her asylum seeking family - have been forcibly taken from their home to be deported. After the initial shock of this news has worn off, these feisty young women are galvanised to take a stand and to fight for the life of their friend, her family, and, ultimately for the rights of all children of asylum-seekers in Scotland. They take on the Scottish Government and the Home Office and succeed where adults and politicians have failed. Their campaign became one of the most vocal and powerful asylum campaigns to capture the imagination of the media and to inspire a community to unite behind its residents; Glasgow Girls is not just a life-affirming musical, it is their story.

Driven by live, gutsy, folk-punk songs and intense, full-blooded choreography, this uncompromising production is a stark reminder that class conflict between those at the bottom of the social heap and those in power is perennial.

James and The Giant Peach between 5 December 2006 and 30 December 2006
James and The Giant Peach is one of Roald Dahl's classic children's tales, an unexpected adventure that starts with James' parents coming to a very strange end, before he is sent to stay with two grisly aunts. The story is wild, dark, funny, bizarre and magical-typical Dahl. There's rhinoceros in Princess' Street, a flock of seagulls lassoed by a spider, a giant peach so big it dwarfs the tree on which it has grown and a strange old man who gives James a bag full of crocodile tongues. Nothing is simple in Dahl's world, and everything is an adventure as James makes some very interesting-and oversize-new friends...

Professor of phonetics Henry Higgins makes a bet that he can train a bedraggled Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador's garden party by teaching her to assume a veneer of gentility, the most important element of which, he believes, is impeccable speech. In ancient Greek mythology, Pygmalion fell in love with one of his sculptures, which then came to life. First performed in Austria at the Hofburg Theater, Vienna on 16 October 1913. First performed in England at His Majesty's Theatre, London on 11 April 1914.

Imaginary philosophical conversation by Denis Diderot, written predominantly in 1761-2 and revised in 1773-4. The recounted story takes place in the café de la Regence, where Moi ("Me"), a narrator-like persona (often mistakenly supposed to stand for Diderot himself), describes for the reader a recent encounter he's had with the character Lui ("Him"), referring to yet not literally meaning Jean-François Rameau, the nephew of the famous composer, who's engaged him in an intricate battle of wits, self-reflexivity, allegory and allusion.
