Name: Giles Havergal CBE
Dates: b. 1938
Notes: Theatre director and actor, opera stage director, teacher, and adaptor. Born 9 June 1938, in Edinburgh. Before becoming the Director of the theatre at Barrow-in-Furness in 1964, Giles Havergal was for a short time an actor on stage and television. He was Director of Watford Palace Theatre (1965-69) where his directing work included the British premiere of Tennessee William's Sweet Bird of Youth. He was artistic director of Glasgow's Citizens Theatre from 1969 until he stepped down in 2003, one of the triumvirate of directors at the theatre, alongside Philip Prowse and Robert David MacDonald. He directed 84 plays in Glasgow and 26 specially commissioned childrens' Christmas productions.
