MS Whistler - Whistler Archive
Papers of the artist James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). Over a third of the 7,000 letters are written by Whistler; the remainder are letters he received. An extensive reference library of over 1,000 volumes on Whistler includes some 200 books from the artist's library, a nearly complete collection of Whistler's own publications and exhibition catalogues, thousands of his presscuttings and hundreds of photographs. Papers relating to Whistler's wider family are also included.
Some of the material received after 1954 and listed as part of MS Whistler has been acquired on the basis that it relates to Whistler in some way. It may not have been created or collected by him.

MS Whistler C21
Letter from James McNeill Whistler to Janey Sevilla, Lady Archibald Campbell, [London]. 110 Rue du Bac, Paris, [September 1895] 'My dear Lady Archie' Has not waited in vain for the time when his portrait of her should be claimed as that of 'the grande dame de par le monde who takes her place in the nations book of Beauty'. Recalls how the Duke and the Argyle 'clan' disowned W's. portrait of Lady A., because of which it was named La brodequin jaune, subsequently gaining many awards on the continent, and as The yellow buskin in America it was bought by the Philadelphia Academy

Letter from James McNeill Whistler to Janey Sevilla, Lady Archibald Campbell, [London]. Royal Lion Hotel, Lyme Regis, Dorset, Letter from James McNeill Whistler to Janey Sevilla, Lady Archibald Campbell, [London]. 110 Rue du Bac, Paris, [September 1895] 'My dear Lady Archie' Mrs W. has been very ill and they have been travelling around under doctors' orders. Is surprised at the 'unlooked for acknowledgement' by the Argyle 'Clan' of Lady A.'s portrait, which because of the Duke's verdict was called La brodequin jaune in Paris and Munich where it won awards, and The yellow buskin in America, where it was bought by the Academy of Philadelphia for 1200 guineas. W. has wired [Croal] Thomson giving his permission for the reproduction of the photograph of the portrait. Asks about [Theodore] Watts [Dunton]. 'Always devotedly J. McNeill Whistler'.
[Watts, who changed his name to Watts Dunton, was the friend of Algernon Swinburne]

MS Gen 1586
Album containing 392 manuscript letters and political addresses, mainly relating to the Paisley Beaconsfield Club and Conservative Association, 1880-1905. Most letters are addressed to the Club's Secretary, Alexander Macfarlane, or President, Sir Archibald Campbell, from Conservative peers, members of Parliament and other supporters. They include several relating to attendance at the Scottish National Banquet to the Prime Minister (A.J. Balfour), originally planned for 23 November 1904 but postponed to 12 January 1905; the joint Hon. Secretaries for this event were George H. Robb and Robert Bird. Most others relate to meetings of the Beaconsfield Club, but some contain discussion of controversial topics such as Orangeism in Ireland and the Boers in South Africa. There are three addresses to the electors of Paisley - by Lord Ernest William Hamilton (1884) and Major R.M. McKerrell (1885 and 1891) - and an address by the Marquess of Lorne (undated).
Most items are pasted in, with manuscript captions identifying authors; some of these attributions are inaccurate.
Authors of nos 283, 292, 362, 367, 369 have not been identified.
According to Christie's sale catalogue the material was collected by Lord Ernest William Hamilton (1858-1939).
