Incerti Avctoris, [?Hippocratis], Dieta. Hippocratis, Aphorismi cvm Commento. Between i, 4. and 1, I. is a loose sheet of paper with the following in Dr. Wm. Hunter's hand: Epistola super multo | tempore vult discere qui in | culmine regimine vult ascendere. | Quatuor sunt venti, quatuor anguli coeli | quatuor tempora . vernus etc. | The first chapters are called Epistolę | Hippocratis | Then there are Theodori Medici Ammonitio | Then Epistola Galeni ad Glauconem | Then Dicta Hippocratis | Then without a title. The first Section of the | Aphorisms abridged into 4 axioms [the last four words obliterated] followed by a comment; and afterwards the seven | Sections of the Aphorisms with a comment. | In these last the aphorism is written with | red Ink and the comment with black. | Before each Section is a numbered List | of the Capitula or axioms. | By Dr. Morton who considered it, it is reckoned almost | undoubtedly of the 8th century. (On the verso of this sheet Dr. Hunter has transcribed the last six lines of this MSS.) On 1, 1 recto upper margin, apparently written by the scribe, but faded and overwritten: Epistola super... multo tempore uult discere qui in culmine regimine uult ascendere [the line quoted by Dr. Hunter]. In an XVIII. Cent. hand partially erased: Epistola hypocritis £55.0. The name of Theodorus occurs on the verso of 4, 3. in a rubric: ammonicio theodori medici, probably that of the 6th century physician of that name. On 4, 7 verso a later hand has added: Disce puer segnis | que | sit sapientia mentis, and a still later (?XIV. Cent. hand): Quicquid habes factum . proles cum digna parenti | Hoc pater e celo tibi reddat triplice dono. Vindicianus was a famous physician in the times of Valentinian. Hippocrates who was born 460 B.C. was the most famous of Greek physicians. Claudius Galen (131-200) was a Roman physician and author. [Formerly P.2.7]. For a full analysis of contents of this MS. see Beccaria (Augusto): "I codici di Medicina del periodo presalernitano", Roma. 1956, pp. 243-246. (Beccaria dates it in beginning of X Cent.) In this analysis 18 (instead of 10) different texts are identified. Medical Works. Glasgow University, Hunterian Library, MS. 404 (V.3.2). Parchment. 147 ff., 280 x 175 mm. S. Italy, s. x in. A collection of medical works, the greater part of the volume containing the Commentary on the Aphorisms of Hippocrates. The text is written in the characteristic Beneventan script of South Italy, in which the cursive elements eliminated in Caroline minuscule are formalised and turned to calligraphic use. The script was current in the region from the middle of the 8th to the end of the 13th century. There are a number of initials ornamented with intricate knot patterns, and grotesque marginal ornaments (heads, birds, etc.). The manuscript is important as one of a small group of surviving texts which exemplify the interest in medical studies in the region which later produced the great Salernitan school. Fifteen medical manuscripts in Beneventan script survive for the period up to the end of the 11th century. |

| Physical Description: | Bound volume. Vellum, 11 1/8 x 7 1/8, ff. 147, written (like T.4.13) in Longobardic characters, in single cols. of 25 lines (26 lines in 10), each 8½ x 4 3/4, margined and ruled with bodkin, no signatures, catchwords, or foliation, probably all cropped, initials often ornamented with intricate know patterns, sometimes rubricated, rubrics, gamboge wash used instead of underlining, vellum coarse and defective, much cropped, few marginalia, several grotesque marginal ornaments, heads, birds, etc., fol. sec. marcias. Late Cent. IX. Binding: Millboards, covered brown (probably faded from crimson) grained Russia, gilt-tooled edges, sides, panelled back, saffron edges, title (gilt) on black and green morocco shields: YPOCRATIS | & | ALIORUM | QUAEDAM | M.S. | SECUL.
