Thomas Elmham, Prior of Lenton's Metrical History of Henry V.: Begins (1, 1 recto line 1): A [blue and red illuminated initial with red gestures] D honorem beatissime trinitatis et ad = Ed. Ends (5, 5 verso lines 25-27): S [rubricated initial] umma superstitio perfidieque status | N [rubricated initial, smaller characters] omine uersifici qui poscit certificari | L [blue initial] itterulas capitum sillabicando petat Ed. Cole, p. 166. Remarks: On i, 2 verso is the autograph: Tho: Martin, [under which]: 37, [and in the opposite corner]: 1- 19-. On i, 3 recto in T. Martin's hand: I have another fair copy of this work in quarto, but defective in | the first Ten Chapters of the fifth year which may be supply'd by | this book. T M. On this page, in pencil, in the top corner: 1 . 11 . 6. On i, 4 recto in a late 17th century hand: Extractum Breve de Cronico Thomę Elmham | de tempore Henrici Quinti. A slip of paper (loose) between i, 6. and 1, I. has in a late XVII. Cent. hand: This relates to the 5 first years of the Reign of H. the 5th | and is in Latin verse. On 1, 1 recto in a late 15th/early 16th century hand: Quaternio ffratris Thome Elham de gestis Regis Henrici | quinti De librario sancti Augustini Cantuariensis. This work does not appear in Dr. M.R. James' Ancient Libraries of Canterbury and Dover, Cambridge, 1903, though mention is made (p. lxiii) of Thomas Elmham as having written a history of S. Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury. On 1, 3 recto in a late 16th century hand: Liber Johannis Twyne de Grayes Inne | ex dono Joannis Twyne patris sui . 1579. | In a later hand: The same John Twine the younger sold the same to John Stowe | the Elder in anno . 1586. Under the final couplet on 5, 5 verso in late 17th century capitals and miniscules: THOMAS ELMHAM MONACHUS | Thomas Elmham Monachus. Mr. C.A. Vellum, 13 1/8 x 9 3/8, ff. 39, originally ff. 40, well written in large text hand, in single cols. of 27 lines, each 8½ x 5, signatures, catchwords, and foliation (XVII.-XVIII. Cent.), elaborately illuminated initials with gestures (in red and blue), rubrics with blue initials, rubricated running titles, marginal additions, ruled with brown crayon and margined in ink, much soiled, first folio marginally mutilated, cropped, few marginalia, fol. sec. te extollunt. Cent. XV. Binding: Millboards, covered spattered calf, blind-tooled (lines), sides, gilt-panelled back, title (ink) on a buff paper label: ELMAM | Extract | breve. Late Cent. XVII.
