Content: Armenian Prayer Scroll or Phylactery, 1661 A.D.
Prayers and Bible readings intended to provide protection for the owner against disease, the Evil eye etc.; a 'hamayil' in Armenian. The script is a fine nostragir with rubricated headings and initials. The scroll is headed by a floral ornament and a cross flanked by two peacocks. The other miniatures in the text are as follows: (i) St. Nerses in blue, green, red, gold, and black. (ii) Crucifixion, Mary and John at foot of cross. (iii) Madonna and child, gold, blue and red. (iv) St. Phocas within a circle. (v) Archangel Gabriel within a circle. (vi) St. George slaying the dragon. Moderately fine. There is a colophon dated, AE 1110 (A.D. 1661).
Written for Ant'ani ordi Grigorin, whose name appears in the text.

Archival History: There is evidence to suggest that this manuscript was owned by William Hunter. It is mentioned in the catalogue of the Hunterian Library (1908) and an annotated catalogue, preserved at the British Library, records that at the sale of the library of Thomas Martin of Palgrave on 28th April 1773, Hunter acquired three manuscripts. Two of these were mediaeval, but the third, lot 127, was 'an Armenian roll' for which he paid £1-11-6. (See D J Weston's 1983 article for an earlier commentary.)
