Inserted loose at the end are two sheets of paper, one (Maley) containing a list of words and conversational phrases beginning: Tabbee Tuan - Your Servant Sir, and the other (Chinese) representing apparently an abacus.

Contents: Classified word list divided into semantic groups (e.g. numbers, birds, fish, place names etc.) often with Cantonese as well as Mandarin pronunciations indicated. Grammatical notes in margins and interspersed among texts. Hardly a Primer. (Per Prof. M.T. Chen, Dept. of Linguistics, University of California: August '75).
Physical Description: Bound volume.
Paper (Chinese), 11 7/8 x 8, ff. 46 (double), written (on one side only) mainly in four cols. of about 28 lines, each about 11 x 1, several folios are blank.
Binding: Double blue paper covers all but gone, back repaired with grey paper as in U.7.5-7

Archival History: Provenance: Possibly sold as Lot 3551 in the sale of Joseph Letherland's library, 1765 (where it is described as "Remarks on the Chinese language, by Mr. Hadley, during his residence in China"). Lot 3551 was purchased by William Hunter for £0.17.0 according to the British Library copy of the Letherland sale catalogue - shelfmark S.C.S. 6 (2).
