Item Details

Call Number: MS Hunter 603 (S.6.16-17)
Date of Creation: Not assigned
Level of Description: Item
Part of MS Hunter 1-658
Content: Charles Alston, 1683-1760, Professor of Materia Medica and Botany in the University of Edinburgh.
On the inner cover of the first of the two volumes is this title, apparently in William Hunter's handwriting: "Lectures of The Materia Medica by Professor Alston". At the top of page 247 of the second volume is this heading: "Methodus Præscribendi. Extracted from Dr. Alston's Lectures on the Method of Compounding Medicines". Towards the end of the second volume is a MS. with the heading at the top of the first page: "Lecture First. On the Rise & Progress of Botany". There are in all seven lectures. 4to.
This is not the MS. of Alston's Lectures on the Materia Medica, published in London in 1770, and edited by Professor John Hope. The MS. is in a very neat, narrow hand, which may have been Hunter's in his youth. It certainly is not like Hunter's later handwriting. Hunter studied at Edinburgh University in Session 1740-1.
