On 1, 1 recto bottom margin, shorn by the binder, is a shield surrounded by a laurel wreath, the space between being coloured crimson and bearing traces of a minute floral pattern in silver. The shield party per fess bears above (azure (?)) a horse (?) rampant issuant (or): beneath bendy of six (azure (?) and or)
This Giovanni Maffei di Verona is not to be confounded with Giovanni Pietro Maffei.

Physical Description: Bound volume.
Vellum, 7 x 4 7/8, ff. 24, written in an Italian hand, in single cols. of 27 lines, each 5½ x 3 3/8, margined and ruled with plummet, catchwords, no signatures (cropped), no foliation, one gilt historiated initial, rubrics, names of interlocutors in dialogue (Achilles, Benedictus, Joannes) of authorities cited and marginal headings, etc., rubricated, initials touched with vermilion, much cropped, the first page spoiled through damp, heraldic blazon practically destroyed, otherwise well preserved, fol. sec. humane. Late Cent. XV. (28th Aug., 1492).
Binding: Millboards, covered crimson (faded to brown) grained Russia, gilt-tooled sides, edges and panelled back, spattered red edges (front), saffron (bottom), title (gilt) on green morocco shields: MAPHEUS [vertical] | 1492. Cent. XVIII.
