Under this in another XVII.-XVIII. Cent. hand: This ancient Manuscript was the Gift in Jan: 1699., of | Christopher Gale Esquire (eldest Son of the Reverend and Ingenious | Mr Miles Gale Parson of Kighley,) now the Queens Attorney | Generall in Carolina, where he marryed the late Governor Har: | :vays widdow, and is a member of the Grand Court, and Judge | of the Court of Admiralty for the precincts of North Carolina.
On 1, 1 recto and 16, 7 verso are carefully erased inscriptions.
On 7, 2 verso is a contemporary note (in brown crayon): Hic deficit l- | usque... ante lego. The lacuna referred to is supplied in another larger contemporary hand in brown ink. 14, 2-5. are a similar insertion to supply the contents of 14, 2-3. (the last half sheets corresponding to 14, 10-12.). The present condition of these quires is shown below:

William Briton or Breton (died 1356), Welsh Cistercian monk, wrote (according to Bale) expositions on the prologues of S. Jerome and treatises on Porphyry and some works of Aristotle, besides this "Summa vocabulorum Biblicorum" or "Dictionarium bibliorum". See Dict. Nat. Biog. vi. 359 (by R.L. Poole).

Vellum, 8 3/4 x 6 5/8, ff. 181, well written in double cols. of 39 lines, each 6 5/8 x 2, margined and ruled with brown crayon, catchwords (mostly cropped), no signatures (cropped), no foliation, initials alternately red and blue, paragraph marks alternately red and blue, small ornaments (filling out lines) in pen and ink with gamboge background, marginalia, much cropped, vellum defective in places, torn at edges, and damp-stained, otherwise well preserved, fol. sec. Abscondo. Early Cent. XIV.
Binding: Millboards, covered spattered calf, gilt-tooled (edges), blind-tooled (sides) and panelled back, spattered edges. Late Cent. XVII.
