Lanfranc (or Lanfranchi) belonged to an old Pisan family of that name, was a pupil of Gulielmus de Saliceto, and became the most famous surgeon of the middle ages before Guy de Chauliac. Through the feuds of the Guelfs and Ghibellines, supporting La Torre, he was forced by Matteo Visconti to flee to France, where at Lyons he wrote his Chirurgia parva in 1270, and going thence to Paris wrote his Chirurgia magna in 1295-6, under the patronage of Philippe le Bel, and died about 1306.
On 13, 12 verso the marginal gestures of an illuminated initial (as in 1, 1 recto) have set off.
