iii, 1 recto, headed, in a late XVII. Cent. hand: 1. practica Jo: Ardern: De Newarke per 70 annos ab anno 1300... [the rest torn off along with the corner] contains numerous paged references which are continued on the verso.
iii, 2 recto, headed, in apparently the same hand: Practica Johannis Arderne de Newark | in Ducatu Lancastrie, contains an index of chapters and subjects in double cols. which extends to the verso. Col. b, line 11: pondere et mensure 57.
On p. 183 in a XVII. Cent. hand: Edward Secker.
On pp. 193 and 194 are marginal translations in English of the (opposite) text in a late XVII. Cent. hand, which also on p. 195 notes "Mr. Cortyn's Alabaster Oyntment."
The other copies of Arderne are press-marked thus: T.5.14; T.6.17; U.4.9; U.7.22; U.8.7.

The Welby of "Robert Green" is probably that in Lincolnshire, near Grantham; possibly however it may be the Leicestershire Welby, near Melton Mowbray.
Query: Was Edward Secker a relative of Dr. Thomas Secker, who was a native of Sibthorpe, Notts.?

Paper, thick, 10 7/8 x 7 3/4, pp. 370, originally pp. 374, well written in one bold round hand with numerous contractions, in single cols. of 34 lines, each 8 5/8 x 5, ruled and margined with bodkin, no signatures, catchwords on each verso, pagination, odd numbers (on rectos only, pp. 1-363), capitulation (in the same hand, 1-54, pp. 1-124), numerous marginalia (in the same hand and later), two coloured drawings (pp. 28, 29). Cent. XVI. (9th Oct., 1544).
Binding: Millboards, covered grained Russia, gilt-tooled edges, sides and panelled back, Dr. Wm. Hunter's crest (a Hunter's Horn) in the lowest panel, title (gilt) on light and dark green morocco shields: IOHAN. | DE | ARDERNE | M.S. Cent. XVIII.
