On ii, 2 verso (reversed) in a XVI. Cent. hand: 2 fo. ntrio subleuata | [another XVI. Cent. hand] Domine Deus noster qui admitt... | [another larger hand] Aue maria Stanchawe | Peterkyn the potter wi[th] [th]y pety pas go pyne (?) [th]e hache so god [unkeyable character]eue [th]e good grace | Petre figule cum tuo pupo passu vade epistolam (?) ... deus det tibi bonam graciam. The last two lines are scribbled in a small contemporary hand. In the left top corner of this page in an XVIII. Cent. hand: 35.
ii, 1. 4. and iii, 1-4. show by their creases and stitches that they formed a limp binding.
On 1, 1 recto top margin, in a XV. Cent. hand: liber domini magistri decani vincentii (?)
On 1, 1 recto bottom margin, in an XVIII. hand: N. P
On f. 16 verso a somewhat later hand has added in the top margin and in line 8: Incipit prophecia Sibille tyburtine.
On f. 124 recto a much later hand has added (lines 18, 19): Explicit hystoria britannica | Galfridi Monemutensis.
On f. 127 verso a contemporary hand has added: Dares frigius et Brutus folio xv.
On iii, 1 recto an XVIII. Cent. hand has: W. Machin.
On iii, 4 recto a XV. Cent. hand has: P [rubricated initial] arce michi domine 2 fo Pro nichil.
On iii, 4 recto (another) XV. Cent. hand has under this: Symon.
Along the inner margin of the verso some six lines have cast off from an illuminated (green initials) MS. in double cols. On the back board is the original title and press mark: L [rubricated initial] iber Daretis de bello | troiano, P [rubricated initial] rophecia Sibille | Tibertine. G [rubricated initial] aufridus | de historia britonum secundi folio [rubricated] que hercules. This title was protected by a horn cover nailed round with small brass nails, the rim remains so fastened. Below is the press mark: K 11.
Dr. Young gives the following copy of an inserted letter, now lost:
I have an old MSS which from the characters appears to have been written in the Early part of Edward 3rds reign - the Price is only 10/6 - it contains Galfridi Monumetensis Historia Britonum. Prophetia Sybille tiburtinę Dares Phrygius de Bello Trojano - et opus quosdam imperfectum de Herculis Laboribus. If you should think of the acquisition of so ancient a MSS worth your consideration at so trivial a price youll please to send an answer to Sr yours etc Edd O Reilly June 24 1776 Exps To Dr. Hunter Windmill Street.

Physical Description: Bound volume.
Vellum, 7½-7 5/8 x 5 5/8, ff. 127, in several contemporary hands, in single cols. of 26-42 lines, each 5 1/8-6 1/8 x 3 3/4-4½, ruled and double margined with brown crayon, signatures, catchwords, foliation, contemporary in 3 [ff. 1-89], modern, in pencil, throughout, illuminated (blue and red) initials with gestures of the opposite colour, rubricated initials, initials touched with vermilion, rubrics (rare), marginal titles (black ink) in ff. 25-80, marginalia, place-finding tabs [ff. 16 and 25], vellum holed in places, ink faded in 4, fairly well preserved, fol. sec. que hercules. Cent. XIV.
Binding: Original, bevelled beech boards, apparently covered originally with rough sheep-skin, now (recently) re-covered with vellum, clasp and catch (noted by Dr. Young) gone, title (ink): DARES | GAUFRIDUS. Cent. XIV.
