Abú al Gházi's Genealogical History of the Tartars (in German):
Begins - after a title page occupying 1, 1 verso thus:- [in Arabic characters] AL KITAB SHAJRI TURKI | Schaagjre Turki | Auctore | [in Arabic characters] ABUL GHAZI BAHADUR KHAN | Abulgasi | Bahadur Chan | Germanice - (1, 2 recto [p. 1] lines 1-5): Kitap | oder . | Ein buch des gantzen Geschlecht-Registers der Tataren | welches ausz dem Tatarschen ins teutsche ubersetzet. | Vorrede:
Ends (35, 4 verso [p. 278] lines 33, 34):... Scribenten zu finden gewes= | sen = St. Petersburg Ed. ii. p. 480, last line.
Remarks: On a folded sheet of note-paper (date of water-mark 1835) is written a translation of the title page on the verso of the folio to which it is wafered: Schaagire Turki | written by | Abulgasi Bahadur Chan | translated into German | This is one of the original copies of the translation | which the Swedish officers while kept prisoners in Siberia | got written - I received it as a present from Mr. | Bernhard Müller, late Swedish Captain, now | Upper Commissary at Petersburgh | One of the books belonging to | T.S. Bayer.
On 1, 1 verso, under the title in an XVIII. Cent. German hand, is the original (translated above) beginning: Dieses ist eines mit von den Originalien der Uber | setzung, welche die Gefangenen Schwedischen Officiers etc
Under this in another (?T.S. Bayer's) hand: Ex libris T.S. Bayeri. For Theophilus (Gottlieb) Siegfried Bayer (1694-1738), a Prussian antiquary and author at St. Petersburg, see U.2.1 and U.4.4.
On ii, 2 recto reversed, is a scribbled line in what are apparently Russian characters.
The French translation, from which the Russian version (RODOSLOVNAYA ISTORIYA O TATARAKH, i.e. Genealogical History of the Tartars, St. Petersburg, no date, 2 vols. [G.U. Lib. O4.g.17,18]) was made, was probably that published at Leyden in 1726. [Brit. Mus. 583.b.31.]
It would be interesting to learn if the German version of this MS. is the same as that "übersetzt von D.G. Messerschmid, Göttingen, 1780." [Brit. Mus. 758.e.24.]
