Thomas Elmham's Historical Poem on Henry V.: (Imperfect.)
Begins (1, 2 recto lines 1, 2): Cronice Regis Henrici quinti . [rubric] | a [space for illuminated initial] d honorem beatissime trinitatis

Remarks: On i, 1 verso an autograph (apparently of Thomas Martin of Palgrave) has been carefully erased.
On a slip of paper attached to the remains of 1, 1. is the following memorandum (by T. Martin): When I was Inform'd (ano: 1727) That Mr. Hearne of | Oxford was publishing the Life of Hen: ye 5th written | by Thomas Elmham I thought this Copy (tho' in verse) | might be of Some Use to him, and therefore Communicated it to him, when his work was almost finish'd. | where in pag: 425 He says. | Hoc opere finito, Codicem MS. (in Membranis) Antiquum | ac Nitidissimum Thomę Elmhami Vitę Metricę Hen: V. - inspexi. &c. Peculium quondam fait Rogeri Walle. | Huic ad Calcem: Constat &c. Nunc pertinet ad virum | Egregium Thomam Martinum Norfolcianum &c.
The Hymn to the B.V.M. (5, 9 verso and 10 recto ff. 40, 41) = Cole's Ed. pp. 164, 165. The initial S of line 7 in 5, 10 recto is the conclusion of an acrostic (THOMAS ELMHAM MONACHUS), which gives the writer's name and profession. In the Cotton MS. Vesp. D. xiii. (paper, small quarto), as in this MS., this acrostic (a Hymn in honour of the B.V.M.) is in the same hand as the rest of the work.
This MS. agrees mainly (see Cole's Ed. Pref. p. xlvi) with the above cited MS.; but was unknown to Cole (see Pref. p. xlv).
This MS. is imperfect. The lacuna extends from the middle of the word Normanniam (rubric) of the first chapter of the fifth year of Henry's reighn to the end of the tenth chapter = Cole's Ed. pp. 149-154.
For T. Martin of Palgrave (1697-1771), see S.1.3.
On the verso of 2, 5. [f. '14'] in an early XVIII. Cent. hand: vide Holingshed vol. 2. pag: 1249.
On the verso of 5, 10. [f. '41'] in a XVI. Cent. hand: Walle.
Dr. M.R. James remarks: Walle was of Lichfield and owned several other MSS. (at College of Arms, Trinity, &c.).
[Formerly Q.6.23; Q.6.111].
