His arms are (sable) a lion rampant, dexter, crowned (argent), as supporters two lions (argent); a couronne de Marquis surmounting the shield.
On i, 6 recto in an early XVIII. Cent. hand: Athenæus de Rebus Mechanicis.
On i, 8 verso are pasted two sale catalogue slips: 7 A beautiful Greek Manuscript of the most of that Collection of Greek | Writers printed in the Louvre, Paris 1693, under the title of Mathe- | matici Veteres, viz. Athenaeus de Machinis, Bito de Constructione bel- | licorum instrumentorum et catapultarum, Heron de constructione et | mensura Manubalistae. Heron Ctesibius Belopoeeca, Poliorcetica ex li- | bris Apollodori, Philonis liber IV. de telorum constructione, ejusdem | liber V. de constructione.
This MS. is beautifully wrote on glaz'd oriental paper, with the figures | of the machines well drawn, it has formerly belonged to Foucalt, in | whose library Montfaucon observes there were most valuable Mss. As | these authors have been but once printed, it is probable this MS. might | be of good use in a new Edition. The book is in folio, and bound in | vellum.
Under this in Dr. Wm. Hunter's hand: £12.12.0.
On 1, 1 recto: Johannis Jacobi Chifletii 1630. Jean-Jacques Chifflet (1588-1660) was a famous French physician, antiquary, and author.

Ce manuscript est illustré de manière intéressante et souvent amusante. Il contient le texte de six traités (ou des extraits de ceux-ci) consacrés pour la plupart à l'artillerie de siège. Les auteurs, Athénée (IIe siècle avant J.-C.) et Biton (IIIe ou IIe siècle avant J.-C.), sont surtout connus par ces traités. Héron d'Alexandrie était toutefois un grand mathématicien, Apollodore de Damas (Ier siècle après J.-C.), un urbaniste et architecte grec qui travailla à Rome, et Philon de Byzance (début du IIe siècle avant J.-C.), un ingénieur dont les ouvrages furent utilisés par Héron. Les traités, de même que leurs versions latines, furent publiés, d'après des manuscrits de la Bibliothèque royale, dans les Veterum mathematicorum opera (Paris, Imprimerie royale, 1693). D'après une note au f. 1r, le manuscrit appartenait, en 1630, au médecin, antiquaire et écrivain français, Jean-Jacques Chifflet (1588-1660); le livre porte également l'ex-libris de l'homme d'État et collectionneur français, Nicolas Joseph Foucault (1643-1721).
