Call Number: MS Hunter 97 (T.4.14)
Date of Creation: Between 1599 and 1699
Level of Description: Item
Part of MS Hunter 1-658
Content: Isocratis, Orationes Sex. Anglice. (Richard Sadleir, Translation of Isocrates Orations.)
John Selden (?), The Privilege of Parliament.
Privy Council, Censure on Dr. John Williams, Bishop of Lincoln. (11th July, 1637.)
On iii, 1 recto is a title by the same hand: Isocrates his orations translated | out of Greek into English | by Richard Sadleir | Esquier. | The contents appeare on the next page.
On iii, 1 verso: Isocrates his orations. | 1. To Demonicus fo. 2. | 2. To Nicocles fo. 8. | 3. His Nicocles fo. 15. | 4. Panegyrica fo. 24. | 5. To Phillip fo. 57. | 6. Areopagetica fo. 83.
In the Isocrates are many marginal notes, Greek quotations and slips containing re-written passages pasted over the text.
The translator of Isocrates may be the same Richard Sadleir who published a Latin work on the breeding and treatment of the horse (?translated from Xenophon's De Re Equestri) in 1557.
The second work is similar in style and handwriting to those attributed to Selden in Hunt. Mus. Lib. T.3.14.
On 9, 3 recto-4 verso are forms of letters (1) to prevent arrest of members' servants, (2) to secure their discharge if arrested, signed thus: Under | my hande and seale, the 26th daie of nouember | giuen 1620 R: S: [and thus:] statute to take houlde of B. afterwards as it | was before. R: S: [on which Dr. Young queries: "Richard Sadleir?"].
For the Rev. Dr. John Williams (1582-1650), afterwards Archbishop of York, who was Bishop of Lincoln, 1621-37, see Dict. Nat. Biog. lxi. 414.
For Francis Lord Cottington (1578-1652), see Dict. Nat. Biog. xii. 293.
