On 1, 1 recto in XVI.-XVII. Cent. French hand are some priced entries.
At the foot of this page and on the last page is the name in early XVIII. Cent. hand: guyon de sardiere. Mons. P. Meyer (Documents Manuscrits, Paris, 1871, p. 113) remarks that this MS. must be one of the two copies of this poem possessed by Guyon de Sardiere (a well known bibliophile), and numbered 528, 529 in the catalogue of his books published in 1759.
At f. 25 recto col. a, lines 9-21 contain the following quaint and interestin biographical note by the scribe: Cy fine maistre guillaume de lorriz [rubric] | J [blue initial] usques ci a parle maistre guillaume | de lorriz qui commanca est Romant | et a tant setest, que plus nen fist | et pour ce quil ne pout . ou quil ne | voult . ou parce que la matiere na belissoit | pas a pluss, ou que il nentendoit | pas la verite du songe a quoy Il deuoit | estre remene. Il plut a maistre Jehan | chopinel de Mun ensuiure ce que maistre guillaum auoit commence et | pole de sore en auant . en telle maniere | con vous orrez ensiuant.

Guillaume de Lorris, the originator of the "Roman de la Rose," dies about 1260. See Didot's Nouvelle Biographie Générale, Paris, 1859, 22.691. Jehan (Jean) de Meun (called Clopinel, the Lame), who continued and completed this work, was born about 1279, and (like his predecessor) took his surname from the town of his birth, not far from Orleans. See Didot's Nouvelle Biographie Générale, Paris, 1865, 35.242.

Vellum, 12¼ x 10½, ff. 133, originally ff. 136, written in a fluent French hand in double cols. of 39-43 lines, each about 11 1/8 x 3½, ruled and margined with plummet, no signatures or catchwords visible, foliation modern (in pencil), red and blue initials alternately, rubrics and rubricated personae, much cropped, vellum defective in places, marginalia, fairly clean and well preserved, fol. sec. Cest celle. Cent. XV.
Binding: Millboards, covered crimson morocco, gilt-tooled inside margins, edges (lines), and sides (lines), and richly decorated panelled back, gilt edges, pale-blue silk ribbon marker, title (gilt): LE | ROMAN | DE LA ROSE. Cent. XVIII.
