On verso of fol. cxxi (122) after the text come four lines in smaller (contemporary) hand: Deficit et languet subito cadit et perit ille. | Qui male manducat quem laudant acmina mille. Sic et impio non prodest preciosa sepultura. sic nec iusto nocet | uilis sepultura. Then in the same hand as the text: Eusebius cesariensis episcopus dicit. (The word 'mille' has been retouched, and c written above ccc by a XV. Cent. corrector, who has added an indecipherable note underneath, and placed the total 5199 in the margin.) Underneath this come three lines of a hymn to the B.V.M. with musical notes:
Aue regina celorum aue domina angelorum Salue radix sancta per quam | mundo lux est orta Aue gloriosa super omnes speciosa uale ualde | decora et pro nobis Christum semper exora. An indecipherable note follows at bottom of page. On the verso of ii, 1. which is much mutilated and worm eaten, are some faded lines, which Dr. Young sought to revive by application of chemicals, but which remain illegible.
iii, 2. contains a Latin hymn of twelve verses, each beginning with a rubricated initial (late XII. or XIII. Cent. hand), of which the first and last verses are:
I [initial, ornamented red and black ink] uste index ihesu christe
regum rex et domine |
qui cum patre regnas semper
et cum sancto | flamine
Nunc digneris preces nostras
Cle | menter suscipere.
. . . . . .
D [red initial] eus pater deus filius
Deus alme | spiritus
Qui semper es unus deus
Diceris et dominus
Tibi virtus sit perhennis
honor et perpetuus. Amen. = Daniel, Thesaurus, v. 386.
The recto has 25 lines, the verso 9; the rest blank, but ruled. An erasure of three lines occurs under this hymn. At the foot of the page are two scrawling lines (French hand XV. Cent.): His iassent in fossa bede venerabilis ossa etc. | babur (?) osta (?) est iste Liber. Dr. James conjectures: babure sta est iste liber. In the index (1, 1.) there were originally prefixed rubricated Roman numerals to the successive chapters; these were erased, and the respective folios substituted for more convenient reference by the foliator.
The index is supplemented in later hands with titles and folios of the works continued in fols. lxxvi-cxxi. On iii, 1 recto is a name in XVI. Cent. hand, Valaubet. On its verso are two Latin prayers in a hand like that of the hymn, as follows: D [initial sketched in outline, not coloured] omine ihesu christe rex virginum integrita | tis amator. muni cor meum ab omni | bus sagittis et insidiis inimici et extingue in me omne incendium libi | dinis . da ueram humilitatem . et tran | quillitatem patientie pectori meo. Incen | de mentem meam tue karitatis stimu | lis. ut hodio habens omnem uiam iniqui | tatis possim cunctis diebus uite mee | complacere tibi. AMEN. [space for initial] s. qui beatum iohannem apostolum et evangelistam relictis calamis te sequi fecisti uo | cantem ut seruata viginitate ce | lestis secreti faceres illum esse consortem . tribue michi famulo tuo ipsius apostoli tui intercedentibus meritis tuis semper | inherere mandatis . et relictis carnali | bus desideriis . et illicitis uoluptatibus tue | in omnibus vniri volun | tati ipsumque anime mee | et corpori tribuas custodem | quem matri | in cruci positus fecisti esse prouisorem. [The two following lines are illegible.]
H. Schenkl (Bib. Pat. Lat. Brit. iv. 4, p. 18, No. 3106), with Migne, apparently assigns the "Scintillae" to Defensor, monachus.
