Call Number: MS Hunter 26 (S.2.16)
Title: Comoediae
Images: [ MS Hunter 26 fol. 25v ]
Date of Creation: Between 1399 and 1499
Level of Description: Item
Part of MS Hunter 1-658
Content: Pvblii Terentii Afri, Comoediae.
Terence's Comedies: (Incomplete.)
Begins (1, 3 recto line 1): Qui gnatum heredem tali ingenio preditum (Andria, I. i. 71/98).
Ends (11, 10 recto line 28): Rogem quod tempus conueniendi patris capere me iubeas (Phormio, V. iv. 9/828).
This MS. has been shockingly abused. Original defects in pages repaired with vellum (contemporary), and paper (binder's). The upper margins gnawed in places.
The following are the lacunae:
All before 1, 3. = ff. 2. Andria, I. i. 1. - I. i. 70/97.
Between 1, 8. and 2, 3. = ff. 4. Andria, II. iv. 8/411. - III. v. 14/620.
Between 2, 8. and 3, 2. = ff. 3. Andria, V. iv. 31/934. - V. v. 26/982; and Eunuchus, I. i. 1. - I. i. 34/97.
Between 3, 9. and 4, 1. = ff. 1. Eunuchus, III. iii. 18/524. - III. v. 28/576.
Between 4, 1. and 4, 4. = ff. 2. Eunuchus, IV. ii. 3/631. - IV. iv. 11/737.
Between 4, 4. and 4, 7. = ff. 2. Eunuchus, IV. vii. 20/790. - V. ii. 59/898.
Between 4,7. and 4, 10. = ff. 2. Eunuchus, V. iv. 30/952. - V. ix. 25/1055.
Between 8, 9. and 8, 10. = ff. 1. Adelphoe, V. ix. 39/996. - V. ix. 40/997; and Hecyra, I. i. 1. - I. i. 6/14.
All after 11, 10. = ff. 4. Phormio, IV. v. 1/829. - V. ix. 66/1055.
The order of the plays in this MS. is: Andria, Eunuchus, Heauton Timorumenos, Adelphoe, Hecyra, Phormio.
In the Heauton Timorumenos lines 185-192 have been transposed and inserted between 192 and 193.
In Heauton Timorumenos line 192 appears between lines 184 and 185. This is a common error in a large group of MSS, in which MSS Gen 1125 and 1189 are included, and recurs in the 15th century printed editions. - per John N. Grant, St. Andrews, May 1978.
Seems to be closely related to Bodley, Clarke MS 28, for Heauton Timorumenos and Phormio at least. Some of the peculiar errors in verse division are shared with a printed edition - B.R.97 (Florence, Bibl. Naz.), see Prete, 'Il codice Bembino', Studi e Testi (1968).
