Item Details

Call Number: MR 19
Title: Catalogue of Anatomical Preparations
Date of Creation: Between 1770 and 1783
Level of Description: Item
Part of MR
Content: William Hunter's catalogue of his anatomical preparations. Not later than 1783. The catalogue is in the hand of an amanuensis, with corrections and additions in Hunter's hand.
On the fly-leaf is this inscription: "Another Copy of the Catalogue of the Anatomical Preparations". At the top of the first page is this title: "Catalogue of Anatomical Preparations".
This is the older of the two folio copies of the Catalogue in the Museum, "for the most part... in the same handwriting". It "contains alterations and corrections of descriptions, and many additional descriptions interlined, all in Hunter's handwriting; apparently it was the copy used by Dr. Hunter himself".
From dates which appear here and there amongst Hunter's interlineations it would appear that "the bulk of the MS. was... prepared between 1778 and 1782, and the corrections and additions presumably were continued up to Hunter's death on March 30th, 1783; there are none of later date".
The volume is MS Hunter 638 in Young and Aitken's catalogue. It is also described in Teacher's preface to his Catalogue of the anatomical and pathological preparations, 1900. MS Hunter 575 (S.4.20) is another catalogue of the anatomical preparations. Other related records are in the Hunter Papers.
