See associated Series
Extent: 185 letters, envelopes, 1 article, 1 page of notes.
Content: Letters written to Edmund Law Lushington from various friends, colleagues and members of the Lushington and Tennyson families. (Lushington was a close friend of the poet Alfred Tennyson. In 1842 he married Tennyson's sister, Cecilia, and the marriage is commemorated in the Epilogue of Tennyson's poem 'In Memoriam'.)

The letters are mainly concerned with personal and family activities and those of mutual friends and acquaintances. Illnesses are a common preoccupation and books are a frequent topic. Authors include the journalist George Venables (also referred to in other letters) and the artist Edward Lear.

Lushington's domestic arrangements are reflected in the letters from his wife, son and daughters (including some letters written in childhood). These date from the 1840s onwards when Lushington was living and working in Glasgow, away from the family home at Park House in Maidstone, Kent. Three of Lushington's children died at a relatively young age and a number of letters refer to these events.
Arrangement: Since the original order was unclear it has been decided to arrange these letters by author and then, where there is more than one letter from an author, in date order. Internal evidence has sometimes made it possible to establish an approximate date for undated letters and these have been placed appropriately in the chronological sequence. There are a few letters addressed to third parties but it has been assumed, particularly with letters from or to children, sometimes lacking dates or place of writing, that these were originally enclosed in letters to Edward Law Lushington.
