Notes: Descriptions of individual documents are based on those of C.H. Brock, Dr James Douglas's papers and drawings in the Hunterian Collection, Glasgow University Library: a handlist (Glasgow, 1993). Those for the figures also incorporate a subject database compiled by Rona Ferguson in 1995-96, with non-formula funding from the Scottish Higher Education Committee.
