Manuscript Collections

Introduction

Records for most of the manuscript collections have now been incorporated in to the manuscripts catalogue. Additions and upgrading of records are ongoing and future planned developments include the attachment of images to selected records. Updated information regarding the latest manuscripts catalogue developments and coverage is available here. Please note that the Scottish Theatre Archive has its own dedicated online STA Catalogue.

Finding Aids

Manuscripts are found throughout many of the collections.  Select a collection below for a brief description.

Detail from
MS Hunter 229 fol 5v

See also the subject index for general guidance on subject areas of the collections (NB. this covers printed books as well as manuscripts; in fact it should be noted that many of the collections contain both manuscripts and printed items so that comprehensive searching where the medium of the item is not an issue will require interrogating both the manuscripts catalogue and main library catalogue).

Ordering a manuscript

Users of the Special Collections Department Reading Room should complete a call slip, transcribing the complete Call Number, with brief details of the document from the Title or Description fields. Any Item Number present should be noted but need not be copied to the call slip; it identifies an individual document in a bound volume. See the Reading Room regulations for further information.

Remote users enquiring by letter, email, etc. should cite the complete Call Number and any Item Number if given.
