How to search the manuscripts catalogue

Three types of searches are available:

  • Name (retrieves collection and/or detailed catalogue records)
  • Document (retrieves detailed catalogue records)
  • Collection(retrieves collection records, including uncatalogued material)

Name Search

  • Search for material relating to a specific individual, eg Oscar Wilde
  • Search based on gender, eg material written by women between 1650 and 1700.
  • Search for a business or organisation, eg Foulis Press

Searching for a specific individual

  • Enter surname in the Name box
  • Enter first name or initial in the Forenames box (optional)

If you are trying to locate letters between two people, try a combined search. Eg, enter Whistler in the upper Name box and Wilde in the lower Name box.

Narrowing search by Gender (optional):
Select relevant Gender if you wish to restrict your search to females or males.

Narrowing search by Role (optional):
Eg, selecting ‘author’ will restrict search results to material written by the person you are searching for, excluding material which simply refers to them as a ‘subject’.

Limiting search by After and Before dates (optional):
Eg, enter 1913 in the ‘after’ box and 1919 in the ‘before’ box to restrict search to material dating to the period of the first world war.

Searching based on gender:

Please be aware that this type of search will take much longer than a Name search.

  • Select relevant Gender
  • Limit search to material dating from a specific period (advisable)
  • Select appropriate Role eg ‘author’ (optional)
  • Entering an initial into the Name or Forenames box will speed up the search (optional)

See preceding instructions for help with this.

Searching for a business or organisation:

  • Enter the start of or full name in the Name box eg Foulis
  • Limit search to material dating from a specific period (optional)

See preceding instructions for help with this.

Search results:

  • Biographical dates and information, where available, is displayed with each person’s name listed.
  • Clicking on the Collections/Documents link on the right-hand side of the page will take you to catalogue records associated with each person listed.

If your search was unsuccessful, please:

  • check that you have spelled search terms correctly
  • try alternative search terms
  • change or remove additional limits
  • try a different type of search: Document or Collection
  • try searching the main library catalogue

Document Search

A number of different searches are possible, eg:

  • Check the catalogue record for material with a specific call number.
  • Search for material using a word or phrase.
  • Search for material from a particular year(s), or place.
  • Search for material by format or language.
  • Search using a combination of the above.
  • Change the order in which search results are sorted by.

  • MS Hunter 110
  • MS MacColl S25
Ensure punctuation and spacing are exact.

  • You can perform multiple Word or phrase searches at a time by selecting different options from the drop-down list in each search box. It is advisable to try alternative words or phrases because terminology in the catalogue record descriptions may differ,
    eg search for prison
    OR
    jail
(You can change the default setting AND to OR in the right-hand boxes.)
  • A specific phrase search eg ‘tour in Scotland’ may not return all potentially relevant material. You could also try searching for
    tour
    AND
    scotland

Language

Choose from the drop-down list.

Document Type

Choose from the drop-down list. You could also try a Word or Phrase search.

Year of Creation

Example: enter 1699 in the ‘after’ box and 1800 in the ‘before’ box to restrict your search to material dating from the seventeenth century.

Combination searching

  • Combine different options to perform more specific searches eg to look for material produced in Rome between 1920 and 1940:
    Place: Rome
Year After: 1919 and Before: 1941
  • Restrict your search to a particular collection by entering the first part of the call number eg
    Call Number: MS MacColl
    Word or phrase: exhibition
Year After: 1911 and Before: 1913
(It is advisable to set other criteria eg date/word or phrase if searching by a common term and/or the call number of a large collection.)

Sorted by

The default setting lists search results in Call Number order. Other options include sorting by date.
