Description: This was plate 16 in the 1846 volume `A Series of Calotype Views of St Andrews, published by DO Hill and R Adamson at their Calotype Studio, Calton Stairs, Edinburgh'. It was printed from negative HA787. The inventor of photography, WHF Talbot, saw book illustration as one of the greatest uses of the new art. Before the advent of photomechanical processes, each plate had to be an actual original photographic print. This "salted paper" print was handmade.
