Title: Cardinal Beaton's Castle, St Andrews; from the sea
Subject: Architecture/Townscape
Description: Photography was brought to Scotland by the friendship of its inventor, William Henry Fox Talbot, with Sir David Brewster of St Andrews. Cardinal David Beaton was murdered here in 1546 and Knox claimed its defenses were "razed to the ground". It was promptly rebuilt but in the 17th c it supplied materials for harbour repairs and became ruinous; it became an Ancient Monument in 1911 .
