Description: George Meikle Kemp's monument to Scotland's bard was nearing completion in October 1844 when this photograph was taken. Kemp had died in a tragic accident shortly before and his young son placed the capstone on the tower. HA469, HA470, HA471 & HA633 were taken at the same stage of construction, HA469 & HA470 from the same point of view; HA471 from somewhat closer and HA633 from farther away. The negative was made on paper watermarked "J Whatman", waxed and retouched in ink
