Title: The Adamson family
Subject: Portrait-group
Description: There are four known group pictures of the family of the calotypist Robert Adamson, who is shown seated at the right. Dr John Adamson, his older brother who first started experimenting with the new art, is on the left. This was likely taken in 1844-45. Working with Sir David Brewster and others at St Andrews, Dr Adamson took some of the first paper photographs in Scotland. He inspired his younger brother Robert to give up his engineering career to set up his photographic studio in Edinburgh.
