||Hill (1802 - 17 May 1870) was a landscape and portrait painter. In 1830 he became Secretary of the Society of Arts in Edinburgh and from 1838-70 was Secretary of the Royal Scottish Academy. He married Amelia Robertson Paton, a well-known sculptor. When nearly 500 ministers walked out in the Disruption of 1843, Hill was moved to paint the scene, and this led to his first involvement with photography. He is shown here at the gateway of Rock House, his partner Robert Adamson's Edinburgh studio.
