PLATE TWENTY

Saltmarket Street

The Saltmarket was known as the Waulkergait in the middle ages and its buildings were destroyed by fire in the seventeenth century. The Tolbooth Steeple can be seen at the north end of the street which is lined with tenements. They were demolished by the City Improvement Trust in the 1870s and the street was widened. This important redevelopment provided the city's first municipal housing.
